Ah, the silence. But not just any silence. It's when it gets so quiet that all you hear is a scream of nothing. But then through that nothing, you hear movement. Clicks. The silence isn't merely silence. Who knew that human ears could pick up such sounds? And then you tear your entire room apart looking for that noise. Because you know what it is, and you just can't find it. And then in the morning, when you're reading your book in bed, and you still hear the silence and the clicking, you know where it's coming from.
What am I talking about?
Ants.
That's right.
Ants in my room, clicking away, at something in my Study Abroad bag that's lying next to my bed. GahROOsss. I have been hearing the ants moving around, crawling over things, into things, under things, through things. But only this morning I realized where they were doing it. In my BAG! EW! I brought it upstairs, went outside on the patio and just DUMPED it. EW. You don't even want to know. I sprayed my room with indoors-safe bug spray. And I hope to never hear that sound again. Because I've heard it before when i left a single wrapper on the floor. I thought it was just my plastic bag settling. But that was NOT. IT. AT. ALL.
You don't think you can hear the movement of insects that tiny? Try sitting in my room. It gets REAL quiet. But hopefully I'll never have that happen again. I've been trying to be so careful. But the machine-like quality of the ant psyche never fails to find just one tiny morsel of food. Not even food sometimes. Oil. Whatever. If food used to touch it, they'll be there.
Can I just say: *SHUDDER*
